UK accounting firms face four fixed dates between 28 October and 7 February. On a calendar they look like a familiar winter: a Budget, a couple of filing deadlines, and Self Assessment at the end of January.

Look at what sits behind each date, though, and it stops looking like one busy season. It is really three kinds of work, landing on the same people, in just over three months.

What Are the Key UK Accounting and Tax Dates This Winter?

There are four. The Autumn Budget is on 28 October. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly updates are due on 7 November and 7 February. The Self Assessment deadline is 31 January.

1

28 October: Autumn Budget

Whatever is announced, clients will want to know what it means for them, and they will ask their accountant first.

2

7 November: MTD for Income Tax quarterly update

The second quarterly update of the 2026 to 2027 tax year for sole traders and landlords in scope.

3

31 January: Self Assessment deadline

The date every practice already plans its winter around. Every return still needs checking before it goes.

4

7 February: MTD for Income Tax quarterly update

The third quarterly update, due one week after the Self Assessment deadline.

It Looks Like One Busy Season. It's Three Kinds of Work.

Each date asks something different of a practice, and that is the part a calendar hides.

Explaining: the Budget

Clients will ask what the Budget means for them. That is conversation work. It can't be batched, it arrives on the client's timetable, and it lands on the people clients already know and trust, who are usually the most senior people in the firm.

Sending: Making Tax Digital quarterly updates

Some clients need Making Tax Digital quarterly updates sent. This is recurring, deadline-driven work, and the number of people it applies to is still rising. HMRC said in August that more than 570,000 sole traders and landlords had signed up, and that more than 436,000 had sent their first quarterly update. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has since started signing up more, in stages. We looked at how quarterly filing changes a firm's workload earlier this year.

Checking: Self Assessment

Then every Self Assessment return needs checking. This is review work. It is the volume most firms already brace for, and it peaks in the same weeks that the other two kinds of work are still running.

Worth saying plainly

HMRC has said no penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates during the 2026 to 2027 tax year. Penalties still apply for late tax returns and late payments. So the quarterly dates are softer this year than they will be from April 2027, but they are still dates clients expect their accountant to hit.

The Dates Can't Move. The Work Behind Them Keeps Growing.

None of these four dates is negotiable. A firm can't push the Budget back a fortnight or ask for the Self Assessment deadline to wait until the quarterly updates are out of the way.

The work behind the dates is the opposite. It grows with every new client and every new question. A practice that took on clients this year has more returns to check, more quarterly updates to send, and more people ringing after the Budget.

So the problem is less about knowing the rules. Most firms know the rules well. It is more about having enough people ready to do the work.

Why a New Hire Is Unlikely to Solve This Winter

The natural answer to "not enough people" is to hire. The difficulty is timing. A new hire who started today would still need to learn the firm's systems, its clients and its review standards, and is unlikely to be up to speed by the time these dates arrive. And that assumes the role is already filled.

We've written before about the gap between making a hire and that hire being fully productive. In a normal quarter a firm can absorb that gap. With four fixed dates in just over three months, the gap is most of the season.

Ready Before the Busy Stretch, Not During It

This is where we help, with outsourced accounting support for UK accounting firms. Our dedicated offshore accounting team of qualified Chartered Accountants, with senior review on every file, can be ready before the busy stretch, not during it.

The order matters. Extra capacity that arrives in mid-January has to be set up, briefed and trusted in the same weeks the firm has least time to do any of that. Capacity that is in place beforehand has already been through onboarding and is simply doing the work when the volume lands.

It also lines up with the three kinds of work. Preparation for quarterly updates and Self Assessment returns can be handed over. That leaves your own senior people free for the part that can't be: the checking they sign off, and the conversations clients want to have about the Budget.
